This song was born from meditations on the Christmas story and the Song of Mary, historically named the Magnificat, found in Luke 1:46-55. In this passage, Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist, who receives her to say, “How could this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” Mary already knew that she was carrying Jesus, “the Son of the Highest,” yet this exchange causes her to overflow with praise.
